Content
Videos combine all elements of visual communication—visuals, text, graphics, sound and music. The reason for doing a video is always the same, to show your audience your story. So whether you’re doing a newscast-type informative video or a commercial-type promotional video, you’ll want B-roll footage to show while your subjects are talking.
The question to ask yourself is, what’s the best way to show this story?
Informative Videos
These are newscast-type videos that inform audiences. If you imagine a newscast, they’re pretty straight-forward, the cinematography isn’t flashy, and they typically include interviews and people talking while using B-roll to “show” what the interviewee is talking about. You can see the most recent RPN Today episode on YouTube as an example.
Promotional Videos
These are the more creative of the two, in that you’re freer to use music, dramatic camera angles, and creative narration to capture the spirit of the story, rather than just the information. In this example of a day in the life of a cooperative, the video doesn’t talk about the logistics or regulations of running a co-op, but instead focuses on what a co-op does for the spirit of a community.
