Extension Mileage FAQ

Beginning in July of 2022, the mileage reimbursement rate for Extension employees within Extension organizational units (e.g. off-campus engagement zones) will increase to the current IRS rate. For more information on the change, read the FAQs below.

Who is eligible for the IRS mileage reimbursement rate?

All Extension employees within Extension organizational units (e.g. off-campus engagement zones) are eligible for the IRS rate. This includes primarily off-campus Extension educators and assistants.

Who is not eligible for the IRS mileage reimbursement rate?

On-campus educators, as well as other extension faculty and staff in academic units, are not eligible for the IRS rate, nor are Extension faculty and staff located at research, extension and education centers, with the exception of Extension educators and assistants.

What is the purpose of the new mileage reimbursement rate?

The change in reimbursement ensures that extension employees who don’t have access to the UNL motor pool receive a mileage rate that commensurates with the costs of operating an automobile for business purposes.

If I am eligible for the new rate, what do I need to do to ensure that I receive it?

The new rate will be automatically applied to mileage expenses logged in Concur after July 11 by all eligible Extension professionals. If you believe you have received the incorrect rate, please contact the IANR business office at financeandpersonnel@unl.edu.
